Barbara Underhill is one of the most popular and richest Figure Skater who was born on June 24, 1963 in Pembroke, Wales, United Kingdom. Underhill is a native of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Underhill got married to Rick Gaetz, with whom she has two sons: Matthew and Scott who all are active in hockey. In September of 1992 she was blessed with twins, Sam and Stephanie, but she lost Stephanie during a fatal drowning incident on May 29th, 1993, just hours prior to Game 7 between the Los Angeles Kings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens. In 1998, Underhill established The Stephanie Gaetz Keepsafe Foundation to prevent injuries to children and to promote water safety.
On February 14, 1984 the Underhill/Martini placed 7th in the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. Then, in March of 1984, the pair took part in the 1984 World Championships in Ottawa. Second in the competition behind Olympic silver medalists Valova/Vasiliev the short program, and first on the open skate. the pair won the first world championship in figure skating after Karen Magnussen in 1973.
Underhill/Martini placed fourth during the 1982 World Championships in Copenhagen, placing fifth in the short-program and fourth in free skate. They made it to the top of the podium during the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki. After finishing third in both of their segments they received the bronze medal, which was won by Elena Valova / Oleg Vasiliev of the Soviet Union and Sabine Baess and Tassilo Thierbach from East Germany.
Underhill worked for 16 years as a skating TV commentator until 2006. She then began working with hockey players to develop their speed and power. Underhill initially worked with the Guelph Storm, of which her husband Rick Gaetz is a part owner. She then began working with NHL teams—first the Anaheim Ducks, followed by the New York Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Underhill was named in the 2011 edition of The Hockey News’s list of the 100 most influential people in ice hockey due to her power skating coaching. Underhill joined the National Hockey League’s Toronto Maple Leafs as the team’s Skating Consultant on April 20, 2012.
