Parker KNZM (born on 13 January 1953) is a former New Zealand broadcaster and politician. He was Christchurch’s Mayor from 2007 to 2013. Christchurch from 2007 until 2013.

In October 2007 Parker was successful in his local elections for Christchurch mayor’s office, following the resignation from Garry Moore. He won 47,033 votes together with Megan Woods (32,821) and Jo Giles (14,454) in the race that was contested by 10 candidates.

Parker was the incumbent mayor at the time of the September 2010 Canterbury earthquake. During the days following the quake, he worked with Civil Defence, the police and the New Zealand Army to get the city back up and running. In October 2010, Christchurch band The Bats and many others played at a free earthquake relief concert in Hagley Park in front of about 140,000 people. Parker joined The Bats for the performance and played guitar.

Despite being the incumbent, he initially polled behind his major challenger until the large 2010 Canterbury earthquake on 4 September 2010. His high-profile handling of the civil emergency was widely praised, and polls taken later showed him taking the lead. It was announced on 9 October that Parker had been re-elected for a second term with 68,245 of the votes to Jim Anderton’s 51,566 based on 98% of the votes counted.

Parker’s involvement in local government spans more than two years. He began his political involvement after he was appointed a vacant councilor position for the Banks Peninsula District Council in 1994. After living in Akaroa for several years the mayor was elected to Banks Peninsula District for two years (2001-2006). He was in favor of a merger of this district and Christchurch City and led a highly publicized and controversial campaign that led to a referendum in 2005. A merger with Christchurch City was endorsed by 65percent of the Peninsula’s voters . The amalgamation took place on the 3rd of March in 2006 when Parker was elected, following the by-election, became the Christchurch city councillor and was the only Banks Peninsula representative on the council.
