Joel Skinner is one of the most popular and richest American baseball manager who was born on February 21, 1961 in La Jolla, California, United States. Skinner was appointed on the team of coaches for the Cleveland Indians on November 10 2000. He took over from Jim Riggleman as third base coach. He was appointed temporary manager of the Tribe on the 11th of July 2002 following Charlie Manuel was let go over a dispute with his contract. The time was when Skinner was among the league’s youngest managers at the age of 41. The team was led by him to a 35-41 mark for the remainder of the season with a record of 15-13 in September. The name of Skinner was mentioned in the list of contenders for the position of manager permanent however Eric Wedge was chosen instead. Skinner was as a member of the Indians coach’s team till Manny Acta was hired in 2009. On the 20th of October in 2010 Skinner was appointed an Oakland Athletics bench coach for the 2011 season. He was replacing Tye Waller. On November 14, 2011, Skinner was hired as the manager of the Charlotte Knights.
In 2016, Skinner was the manager of the Winston-Salem Dash of the Carolina League.
On January 17, 2018, former MLB catcher, coach and manager Joel Skinner was named as the 45th manager of the Rochester Red Wings, the Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, of the International League.
Skinner managed for six years his team in the Indians minor league system between 1995 to 2000. In all, he posted the score in the range of 448-333 (.574) and led his team into the postseason in five out of six seasons. In 1995, Skinner directed his team the Watertown Indians to a record of 46-27 and an N.Y.-Penn League title and was awarded the honor of Manager of the Year. As a member of his team, the Columbus Redstixx (South Atlantic League) in 1996, he led them to a second-half title as well as an overall performance of 79-63. In 1997Skinner directed his Class A Kinston Indians (Carolina League) and they took home championships in both the first and second half with an overall record of 87-53 and earned his Carolina League Manager of the Award of the Year. From 1998 to 1999 Skinner directed his team, the Akron Aeros and was named USA Today Baseball Weekly’s Minor League Manager of the year in 1998. He did this after leading the Aeros to an 81-60-win record and the Eastern League regular season title. Skinner later led his team of Triple-A Buffalo Bisons to the highest results for the International League in 2000, including the IL North Division title with an overall record of 86-59 (.593). The Bisons’ management led to him being awarded Minor League Manager of the Year awards in the publications Baseball America and The Sporting News and was named International League Manager of the Award honors. In the same season, Skinner was an assistant coach for Team USA in the 2000 All-Star Futures Game in Atlanta.
Skinner’s career didn’t really recover following the incident. He bounced around between minors and majors as a member of the Cleveland Yankees along with the Cleveland Indians until his retirement in 1994.
In 2011 Skinner was hired as the manager of the Charlotte Knights, the White Sox Triple-A affiliate, for the 2012 season.
