She is the daughter of Ann Dunham, an American cultural anthropologist, and Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian businessman. Barack Obama, her older half-brother, is the 44th President of the United States. She claims she was named after Maya Angelou, an American poet.
Soetoro Ng was a high-school history teacher at La Pietra: Hawaii School for Girls, and the Education Laboratory School in Honolulu. From 1996 to 2000, she taught at The Learning Project in New York City and designed curriculum.
Soetoro-Ng received her B.A. degree from Barnard College of Columbia University. She then received an M.A. in secondary language studies and an M.A. in Secondary Education from New York University. In 2006, she received a Ph.D. in international comparative education from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
In May 2007, Soetoro-Ng announced that she would assist Obama in his campaign for presidency, and took two months off to campaign for him.
